After four years of service to the residents of Cortland County, County Highway Superintendent Philip Krey has announced plans to step down as Cortland County’s top highway official.

Krey who oversees the County’s over 200 miles of roads, bridges, and culverts but also is tasked with oversight of the County Airport as well as the County Solid waste operations including the Landfill and Recycling Center.

Krey says, “He has enjoyed working for the County of Cortland, and is appreciative of the opportunity to serve in the capacity of Highway Superintendent.”

County Legislature Chairman and Acting County Administrator Charles Sudbrink says, “He appreciates the time and effort Mr. Krey has given to the county.” Sudbrink noted that Krey has had a good working relationship with the Legislature and has aggressively sought State and Federal grant funds for highway projects as well as funding for on-going improvements at the Airport.   Mr. Krey is also credited with implementing a cost saving time schedule for the highway department allowing for necessary highway work to be accomplished while reducing overtime expenses.

Mr. Krey’s resignation will take effect on July 27th; the Legislature will put a search committee together to begin reviewing qualified applicants for the position. In the interim Chairman Sudbrink will provided oversight for Highway staff.

Highway Committee Chairman Christopher Newell and Solid Waste Committee Chairman Donnell Boyden both wished Krey success in his future endeavors and thanked Krey for his dedication and hard work.

Chairman Sudbrink said, “Replacing key staff like Mr. Krey is never an easy task but, rest assured previously approved Highway and Bridge projects will continue as planned as well as ongoing improvements at the County Airport.”
